Tips for Exploring the Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road, Coastline

The Great Ocean Road stretches over 240 spectacular kilometres from Torquay to Warrnambool in Victoria. Self-driving is a great way to do it and these practical tips will help you make the most of your Great Ocean Road adventure:

Planning Your Route

  • The Great Ocean Road can get very busy, especially during the holiday season, so planning your route before you go will mean a much easier and stress-free trip.

  • There are plenty of highlights to see on the Great Ocean Road, such as the Twelve Apostles (see below), Apollo Bay and the Shipwreck Coast, so ensure you decide what you want to see so you can plan your stops around it.

  • The caravan parks in Port Campbell and Wye River are among the best places to set up camp and are close to many of the biggest highlights of the area.

  • If you choose to travel during peak times, it is recommended that you book your accommodation or parks early, so that you don’t risk losing out.

Packing Right

  • It can get cold down on the Great Ocean Road, so bringing warm clothes for autumn/winter and even a light jacket and long pants in spring/summer is recommended.

  • Walking shoes are essential on the Great Ocean Road; treks and hikes into nearby parks and wilderness areas are popular and you won’t want to miss out!

  • While the campervan will hold most of your essentials, packing things like raincoats and gumboots can also be handy if you run into wet weather.

  • Taking picnic blankets and food supplies are also a great way to make the most of your stop-offs along the way, especially if you find a spot that’s particularly picturesque

Viewing the 12 Apostles

Twelve Apostles Melbourne Australia

One of the biggest attractions of the Great Ocean Road is the iconic Twelve Apostles. The best time to see them is early in the morning when they glow beneath the rising sun. If you base yourself in Port Campbell, the Apostles are only a short drive away, making it easy to get there in time for sunrise and before the crowds swell.

Driving Safe and Smart

  • Ensure everything in the campervan is securely stowed before you commence driving.

  • Avoid driving at dawn or dusk as this is when wildlife is most active and never drive when you are tired

  • There are many winding roads on the Great Ocean Road routes, so avoid unnecessary overtaking.

  • Only allow those listed on your rental contract to drive the campervan.

  • Remember, if you’re driving on a public holiday/long weekend, double demerit penalties will apply.

If you’re ready to hit the Great Ocean Road, our campervan hire in Melbourne will have you sorted in no time! To begin your self-drive adventure, complete a quote above!
