As the gateway to the Whitsundays, Airlie Beach is a popular tourist spot that offers magnificent beaches and unforgettable views, not to mention lots of fun in the sun! If you’ve arranged your campervan hire at Airlie Beach or if you plan to in the near future, here’s how to make the most of this fabulous destination:
Known as the main street in Airlie Beach, Shute Harbour Road is your one-stop-shop for cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs, shops and even art galleries. You’ll find everything you need here, from burgers and pharmacies to day spas and tour charters.
Swimming is second nature at Airlie and you can either swim at Airlie Beach itself (great for families, BBQs or picnics) or head to the man-made Boathaven Beach to the east. Of course, there’s also the infamous Airlie Beach Lagoon – a great option if you’re campervanning around with small kids or if it’s stinger season on the coast.
With several boat hire services to choose from, you’ll be able to explore the surrounding Whitsunday waters from Airlie as your very own skipper! Sailboats, yachts, catamarans and powerboats are available and make for a great day out on the ocean. If you’ve never driven a boat before, you can request a few introductory lessons before going off on your own.
If you’re staying at Airlie Beach, heading out into the beautiful Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef is a must. If you can’t get there with your own boat, there are plenty of cruises and charters on offer, both by sea and air, and common stop-offs include Hamilton Island, Daydream Island and Long Island.
If you love to stay active, there’s no shortage of sports and activities at Airlie Beach. Common water sports here include kayaking, jet skiing, paddle boarding, fishing and learning to sail. On land you can enjoy a round of golf or hike into the surrounding hinterland.
The Conway National Park lies adjacent to Airlie Beach and is a gorgeous rainforest just waiting to be explored. Secluded beaches, dazzling waterfalls and remarkable Whitsundays views are all top attractions here and walking and hiking tours are readily available.
