Museum of Tropical Queensland

Townsville, Queensland 4810

Come to a world-class and multi-award winning museum! What used to be called Queensland Museum in 1987 is now MTQ or Museum of Tropical Queensland. MTQ houses a fascinating collection of historic creatures in the past, a diverse flora and fauna, the hidden life of the sea and the history of Queensland's ancient life. One of MTQ's favorite is the Pandora Gallery, proudly presenting evidences of the HMS Pandora and its unfortunate voyage. The ship was a 24-gun Porcupine-class sixth-rate post ship sent by the British Admiralty in 1790 to capture the Bounty and her mutinous crew. The ship was wrecked on the return voyage when it struck the Great Barrier Reef in 1791. On the other hand, the Great Gallery of MTQ features the life size model of the bow of the HMS Pandora. Other permanent exhibitions on site are priceless. The whole museum focuses on the past secrets of the North Queensland including 5 other galleries: Discover Tropical Queensland Gallery, MindZone, Rock Rangers Space Lab, Your Shipwreck Adventure and the Enchanted Rainforest.
