Auckland is one of the premiere surfing destinations in the world, with several beaches to be found in just about every corner. More people are discovering the waves and swells of the Auckland beaches, and even more are finding that the most exciting (and cheap) way to travel around New Zealand is in a campervan. Here are some tips on finding your own self-drive surfing adventure in Auckland.

Know the best time to surf in Auckland

Although the waves are typically perfect any time of the year, Auckland beaches are filled between December to March. The weather gets cooler from April to November, so put on a wetsuit when you catch the waves. Read more on the Best Time to Visit Auckland.

Look for the right campervan

Size is an important factor, since you will need to carry your surfboards in the vehicle. Make sure that your chosen vehicle has enough room to accommodate your surfboard inside the vehicle. Another option is to look for a campervan with roofracks.

If you're planning to do some freedom camping, it is best to look for a self-contained motorhome so you don't need to worry about looking for a toilet. MyDriveHoliday can help you find a self-contained campervan. Simply click on the "Only Show with Toilet/Shower" when using the Quote Calculator.

Auckland Surfing Beaches

Piha Beach is only around 40 minutes away from Auckland, and is possibly the most popular surf beach in New Zealand. It is known for the black sands and amazing surf. The North and South Piha is divided by the great Lion Rock, a well known landmark on its own. There are four campgrounds around Piha, most of them close to the beach. Look for Campgrounds in Piha.

Another black sand beach that's just a short drive away from Auckland is the popular Muriwai Beach. In addition to having great waves, Muriwai is also an excellent fishing spot and home of a gannet colony. Want to camp close to the water? There is one motor camp located right at the beach.
