WEATHER

As Australia is such a large and diverse country the weather varies dramatically from the North to the South. So no matter what time of year you are travelling there will be an area with weather and temperatures that suit you.

QUEENSLAND
‘Beautiful one day, Perfect the next’, this is how Queenslanders describe their weather! Averaging 300 sunny days per year, Queensland has warm summers and mild winters. During summer Queensland experiences tropical storms and occasional cyclones in the north of the state.

Summer (December to February)
Summer in the South East is warm and humid, with temperatures averaging around 30?C but climbing into the mid to high 30s at times. Its perfect beach weather!

Further North around Cairns it is the wet season with temps averaging around 32?C and climbing higher on some days, with a very high humidity. Beaches are closed due to stingers although the reef is still open and stinger suits are available.

Winter (June – August)
The South East averages 20?C in winter and drops down colder at night. Winters
are very mild and dry.

The North doesn’t really experience a winter, temps averages 23?C and swimming and outdoor activities are at their best at this time of year. This is the dry season.

NEW SOUTH WALES
NSW is in a temperate zone and temperatures aren’t usually extreme. Sydney has a Mediterranean climate and is sunny and mild. In winter skiing is available in the snowy mountains, which is the coldest area of the state. The north west of the state can become very hot in summer.

Winter (June – August)
Temperatures average 16?C and drop lower at night.

Summer (December to February)
Temperatures average 26?C in Summer. NSW has some of the best beach in Australia, including the famous Bondi beach, temperatures during summer are perfect beach weather – bring your sunscreen!

VICTORIA
Summer is warm to hot and dry, winter is cold and wet and spring is cool. The warmest months are January and February, October is the wettest month and June and July are the coldest months. Parts of Victoria experience some of the coldest weather is Australia. The climate can vary across the state with the north being drier and warmer than the south.

Summer (December to February)
Temperatures: from 21°C to 34°C, average 28°C

Winter (June to August)
Temperatures: from -1°C to 12°C, average 8°C

TASMANIA
Unlike most of Australia Tasmania experiences four distinct seasons. With snow capping mountains in Winter the days can have crisp blue skies and bracing air. Summer is lovely and mild with long days. Spring and Autumn average temps in the mid teens.

Summer (December to February)
Average max tempurature 21°C (70°F)

Winter (June to August)
Average max tempurature is 13°C (55°F)

NORTH TERRITORY
The Northern Territory has two distinct climate zones. The tropical North, including Darwin, Kakadu and Katherine is hot and humid in summer and warm to hot and less humid in winter and experiences tropical rains in summer. This region does not experience a winter as such. Central Australia is the second zone and includes Uluru(Ayers Rock), Alice Springs and Tenant creek. This is a desert region and is hot during the day and nights can be cold during winter. They do not experience tropical rains here.

Summer (December to February)
Tropical North - Max average temperature - 31C (88F)
Central Australia - Max average temperature - 35C (95F)

Winter (June to August)
Tropical North - Max average temperature - 31C (88F)
Central Australia - Max average temperature - 20C (68F)

SOUTH AUSTRALIA
There is a variety of climate zones in South Australia. The coastal areas, including Adelaide (the capital) experience warm dry summers and cool wet winters. The coolest and wettest season is winter. The north of the state is desert and is very dry with very little or no rainfall with max temperatures in summer reaching over 40?C. Spring and Autumn in Adelaide are usually moderate and pleasant.

Average temperature range 16.8°c - 29.1°c

Winter (June to August)
Average temperature range 7.7°c - 15.7°c

Western Australia
Being the largest state in Australia, Western Australia has very diverse climates. The North is tropical, The South is Mediterranean and the centre is semi arid.

North
The north has two seasons, a sunny dry season with hot days and mild nights from April to September. And a wet season from October to March which is humid with heavy rains and thunderstorms. Some areas in the far North experience extreme heat for extended periods.

The Centre
The central part of the state is semi arid and mostly desert. Temperatures can be extreme is summer and winter and vary across the state.

The South
The south, including the capital city of Perth, has a temperate Mediterranean climate.

Summers are warm and dry and winters are mild and wet. Perth has famous cooling sea breezes that spring up on summer afternoons.
