Waimate Strawberry Fare

Every December, residents of Waimate paint the town red with a never-ending sea of strawberries as part of the Waimate Strawberry Fare, celebrating the little red fruit and its substantial contribution to the area’s economy.

Thousands of visitors flock to Seddon Square and Bolland Park each year to munch on punnets of plump local strawberries and join in with the fun. Unleash your inner farmer and try your luck in the scarecrow-making, cross-cut sawing and cow-milking contests, or just lie back and enjoy the live music. Each year stall demand outstrips available sites with 250 sites on offer.  Strawberries and ice cream sell in their hundreds, punnets by the thousands.

Strawberries have been grown in the Waimate region since 1880 they were then and still are today an important contriubtion to the Waimate economy.  In 1984 it was decided to celebrate this little luscious red fruit by staging a community event  - from there the rest is history. Enjoy fine cuisine with an international flavour on offer including Indian, Swiss, Turkish, French, Chinese and of course kiwi favouites the BBQ, hot dogs etc.  Fine wines, cheeses, and other culinary delights are also on offer.
