Timaru Festival of Roses
November 26 – November 30
Every year, the port city of Timaru welcomes the start of the summer with the Timaru Festival of Roses. Visitors can enjoy workshops, exhibitions and garden tours, all in honour of the flower that bursts into bloom around November.
The theme for 2008 is “Treasure”, and the programme is packed with events for all the family. The Country Garden Bus tour gives floral fanatics a chance to see the region’s roses in all their splendour across six country gardens. Alternatively, if you’d prefer to go at your own pace, the Timaru Gardens offer free self-guided walks and the Botanic Gardens organise a free twilight tour.
There are also exhibitions and workshops to demonstrate the creative potential of the rose. Activities range from creating a floral centrepiece for your dining table to the Rose-Tinted Fashion exhibition, which traces the use of the rose in dresses across the ages.
If you can only make one event, go to the Roses on the Bay Market Day on the 30 November, where there’s entertainment, children’s activities, stalls and free demonstrations on flower presentation.
This event is also held in conjunction with the New Zealand Hat and Hair Art Awards. Please visit the event website for more information.
