Australia Great Hughenden Camel Endurance Ride

In August 2008 the tiny outback Queensland town of Hughenden will host a 160 kilometre camel endurance race. Prepare to see features on the Australian Outback. Of how people live, work and play in one of the more arid parts of the world. With street displays, international speakers and static exhibits the festival will focus on sustainable living in arid regions. This event will be on August 22, 23 & 24th August, 2008 with a $50,000 prize purse, the 160 km camel endurance race will be run in Porcupine Gorge (where dinosaurs roamed, where ancient tribal Aussies hunted!).

An event like this has never been staged in Australia. It will take place in the sleepy Outback town of Hughenden in central western Queensland. Test the skill and the amazing endurance abilities of this extraordinary animal. From way back until now, camels played a major role in this vast and desolate interior, covering huge distances with loads that were unimaginable for other beasts of burden. Experience the hardship and trials just to finish the race - the main highlight of the Outback along with its rugged beauty.

Teams and camels will come from all over Australia the Middle East, America, Asia and Europe. The competition will be intense. There is potential for reciprocal event being held in the UAE in 2009. Come to the real outback, the heart and soul of Australia, this is where the tough get going and the weak fall off the edge.
