Food in Australia is top quality and there is a huge variety. Fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh meats, seafood and quality bread and baked goods are widely available.

Shopping and preparing food in your campervan or motorhome will be easy. There are numerous places to buy food, most towns have at least one supermarket, the biggest of these being ‘Woolworths’ and ‘Coles’ but look out for others, there are smaller versions of these called convenience stores, or corner stores, also with a wide variety of names – IGA, 7Eleven and Night Owl being just a few. There are some that open 24 hours but most will be open seven days and close between 7pm and 9pm.

Supermarkets and convenience stores stock most of what is available in the Supermarkets – Fruit and Vegetables, meats, bread, milk, drinks, everything you need to prepare a meal, although they have a smaller range.

Also there are many grocery items in Service Stations, or Petrol Stations. Some even have their own convenience stores built in.

Australians love their bakeries and every town has its own. These are great if you are passing through, or don’t want to go to the trouble of cooking a full meal. Here you will find the famous and delicious Aussie ‘Meat Pies’ available in a wide range and a cheap way to feed the family. Bakeries also stock a range of fresh bread, and things like pizza bread, sandwiches, and fresh cakes and biscuits, great for easy and cheap lunches on the road or while traveling to your Australian destinations.

If you are looking to eat out or get some take away Australia has a huge range of international foods – including – Thai, Indian, Chinese, Italian, including many pizza shops, greek and heaps more. Most of the smaller towns have their own Chinese restaurant and eat in or take away is available.

Pubs or ‘Hotels’ offer cheap and often delicious ‘Counter Meals’, a lot of pubs have a dining room where you can get reasonably priced and tasty meals for the whole family. This is a great way to meet the locals and get involved in the culture.

Famous foods to try in Australia are Sydney Rock Oysters, King Island Cream, Bowen Mangoes, macadamia nuts, Barramundi, world class cheeses, wine from the famous wine regions and locally brewed beer is excellent.
