What started off as a local fuel turned out to be a trend! Cow chips have been used for a variety of activities for hundreds of years. In the early days when the first settlers arrived, they relied on these cow poop to keep warm, fuel for a campfire or stove. This little brown crap is so important that it is even called brown gold.

Now, it is a sport for all OK to enjoy. Competitors even from Australia, Germany and Japan garner for the crown. Throwing cow chips today will bring world recognition. Everyone gets the chance to pick two chips from the pile. The rules? There is only one rule. Ya gotta do it bare-handed!

Who holds the world record? (Yes, there is a world record!) Leland Searcy in 1979 holds the record with a 182′3 hurl. If you think you’re up for it, then head on to Beaver and take a chance at this family oriented sport. Otherwise, just have some fun with chips!

Anvil Shooting Festival
What’s interesting in Laurel,Mississippi in April? The all-time festival state: The Anvil Shooting Festival. It’s a bit bizarre, but for the people of Mississippi, it’s all fun!

The annual event at Laurel’s Wood Expo held every April dates back to the Civil War when the Yanks came through the South destroying all of the metal works. They’d put gun powder underneath the anvils and try to blow them up. And up they went, up in the air. Now, from this historical event, sprouts a bizarre festival that everyone loves and enjoys!

If you wish to join the event, the rules are simple. The anvils must be made of steel and weigh at least 100 lbs. Not more than 2 pounds of black powder can be used to blast that anvil in the air. There are two classes in the event, the Traditional and the Super Modified. In the Traditional class, shooters use real, antique anvils and shot the traditional way. Some anvils shot the traditional may reach heights up to 100 feet, but for some that’s not high enough, now that’s the Super-Modified category.

But here’s something you should know: No one has ever been crushed by a falling anvil and no one has ever lost an arm to the explosive blasts.

Don’t miss out on this explosive event when touring around the Deep South!
