Cuba Street Carnival
21 February 2009
At Wellington’s free, spectacular Cuba Street Carnival a global mix of music and dance expresses the city’s animated cultural diversity. The first Cuba St Carnival on 21 February 1999 celebrated the distinctive artistic culture of Wellington’s most loved street with an audience of 15,000. The spectacular growth in popularity over 10 years now sees the event attract national and international interest, and audiences of 150,000, while keeping the eccentricity of Cuba St at its core.
The Cuba St Carnival trust is a non-profit organisation dedicated to delivering the most extraordinary, diverse, and creative inner-city celebration in New Zealand, transforming Wellington’s streets into a free explosion of colour, music and performance. In 2006 the Cuba St Carnival was granted a ground-breaking resource consent, enabling it to extend and expand into neighbouring streets, and from 2007 it was re-established as a biennial event, alternating with the New Zealand International Arts Festival.
The 2009 Cuba St Carnival celebrates 10 years to the day since the very beginning.
The carnival opens on Friday night with an outdoor film and continues throughout the weekend with no less than seven stages, buskers, markets, food stalls and other special events. The highlight of the occasion is the illuminated night parade on Saturday.
