Can - Am Crown International Sled Dog Race

Thirty, 60 and 250-mile races draw mushers from all over the world to Fort Kent in the pursuit of juicy cash prizes at this sled-racing event. The 250-mile race is also a qualifier for the Iditarod and Yukon Quest competitions. This is a busy time for Fort Kent; the streets buzz with excitement as between 500 and 600 dogs mingle with nearly 7000 spectators. The Can-Am Crown 250 race starts on Main Street, with designated spectator points in the towns of Eagle Lake, Portage Lake, St John, St Francis and Allagash.
The races will be held February 28 - March 3, 2009. The event will be hosting three races with a total purse of $40,000: a 30-mile race, a 60-mile race, and the well-known 250-mile race. The 250-mile race is a qualifier for the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest.
In their seventeenth great year, the event continues with the traditional Canadian-American experience, with mushers and spectators from throughout the United States, Canada, and other countries. Award ceremonies for the shorter races take place on Sunday, while that for the big race takes place on Tuesday night. Breakfast parties and a mushers banquet add to the fun and make this a top family event.
