Lucky Rookie

39 Reviews

The funky Lucky Rookie is a 2 Berth automatic Toyota Tarago sleepervan which is pretty much a spaceship from the future - a race car mixed with a hostel room. The Lucky Rookie is more than perfect for a couple or two very close friends on a budget.

“Vehicle was fine - a good drive and problem free - however the cushions(bed) was grubby and too thin (worn out?) I had to buy an inflatable mattress! Otherwise fine!”

“I use Lucky Rentals because there is no branding or offensive messages like Wicked and the rental fees are low. I'd like to see Lucky offices in every capital city!”

“I was a little concerned at first because the vehicle had done over 520,000km and had quite a few little dents etc. I thought it was a bit rough but found it drove well and I fell in love with it. It didn't let me down, was quite economical and served my purposes very well and was good value.”

“We felt the quality of the bedding was extremely poor, and the condition of the plates and cups was unhygienic due to cracks etc the vehicle went well considering its age and mileage done”

“We had a fantastic experience with Lucky rentals. The van was an older model and had done high kms, but that didn't matter to us. It drove smoothly and never used any oil or water (something to consider when going into the desert). I was very impressed to see that the oil was brand new also. They were great to deal with and I'd definitely use their service again :)”

“I couldn't sleep properly at all because the bed collapsed if you put too much weight on it. This meant that only one person could actually sleep in the can so we had to go out and buy a tent (after a night of sleeping in the passenger seat) Also the back curtain wouldn't close so the sun came blasting in at 5am both waking the one sleeping person up and turning the car into an inferno. We cut short our trip.”

“Aside from a slight jerkiness when accelerating/decelerating the van ran well, it was easy to drive, easy to rearrange for sleeping, comfortable for staying in and most of all very affordable! Win!”

“The Tarago we hired was mechanically sound and drove extremely well for the huge amount of kilometres we drove in WA. It was a great vehicle. The cushion covers were very grubby and we bought some extra sheeting in order to make sure they were well covered while we slept. We absolutely understand that this is a budget option campervan and have no complaints about the comfort or performance of the vehicle. ”

“Van was good value for money But was 15yrs old with many worn parts which didn't function as they should and needed repair or complete replacement. During last week of rental (6th week), the van had overheating problems which resulted in lost vacation time. Van needed servicing due to a thermostat Issue. New thermostat was installed and van ran great as previous 5 wks. Van is in great need of compartment renovation which certainly explains the low Rental Cost.”

“These vans are an accident waiting to happen , they are ex juicy vans that should have been crushed . They are registered in QLD and then rented in other states to avoid roadworthy complience . Our van had no hand break , no drivers side shock absorber . All the panels where dinged wich makes me think that part of their business model is to keep the money from accidents without doing repairs. I knew at that price that they would be old and worn , but I expected the van to be safe.”

“Although the vehicle had a fare amount of kms on it 470,000, everything worked. Some things were loose but they worked, ie: ignition and door keys. Mechanically it was okay and safe. The window black outs could have used a wash, dusty and stains. I was satisfied with the vehicle it was a simple unit but met my needs. I would rent one again.”

“Really good value camper. The interior was well worn. It was fairly clean but we gave it a good clean before we set off on our journey. The vehicle was very reliable. Easy to drive automatic. If you want luxury and space this isn't for you but if you're used to hostels or rather than luxury hotels it will be fine. Not too much storage space but fine for two with a rucksack each. The bedding was pretty old - we used sleeping bags and a borrowed fitted sheet. The cooking equipment was adequate.”

“the Argentinian man was helpful. I et it run for 10 min and noticed that the air condition was not working. I pointed it out to the young man and he said that it was very hot and therefore the ac did not work so well. I trusted in that hoping that once I was on the road it would cool down... Well, in fact it did not work at all for the entire time. today I pointed this out to Robert Abrahams from Juicy. He checked the ac and immediately said that it needs gas! ”
