Driving from Brisbane to Sydney is one of the great Aussie road trips and if you plan to take on this gorgeous coastal drive, here are our best suggestions on where to stop along the way.

Byron Bay

Byron Bay is one of the best coastal towns in NSW and you’ll reach it around 2 hours into your drive. You’ll find plenty of amazing beaches to relax at here, and other popular activities include surfing, golfing, kayaking, biking, helicopter touring, hot air ballooning and exploring the surrounding hinterlands.

South West Rocks

Located just a short drive south from Nambucca Heads, South West Rocks is a fantastic place to enjoy amazing coastal views alongside swimming and surfing. The Smoky Cape Lighthouse and the Trial Bay Gaol are two must-see attractions in this town. Love diving? The local Dive Centre also runs diving tours to Fish Rock, where you can swim with dolphins, turtles and even sharks!

Port Macquarie

Port Macquarie

Port Macquarie is a great place to stay if you want to combine the perks of a city with amazing ocean landscapes. You can make the most of the beaches, trek through the nearby forests and national parks or explore the shops, bars, restaurants and museums the town has to offer.

Crowdy Bay National Park

Crowdy Bay is a perfect stopping point along the Brisbane-Sydney route if you’re looking to camp out and connect with nature. Mountain vistas and ocean views come together here and at various times during the year, you can even see whales swimming off the coast!

Sugarloaf Point Whitehouse

Myall Lakes

Myall Lakes is one the gems of the NSW central coast and is ideal for camping and beach/lake activities like surfing, kayaking, boating and fishing. The beaches and the surrounding national park present many opportunities for fulfilling walks and treks, and the historic Sugarloaf Point Whitehouse is also worth a visit.

The Entrance

The Entrance is a popular holiday spot, just 1.5 hours north of Sydney. There is plenty to see and do here: hire a boat, catch a fish, watch pelican feeding or trek to one of the many lookouts in the area. In town, you can dine at a restaurant, visit shops and galleries and even play a game of giant chess!

Tips for a Safe Campervan Drive

  • The Brisbane to Sydney coastal route takes around 13 hours, so make sure you stop for breaks and share the driving if possible

  • MyDriveHoliday offers campervan hire in both Brisbane and Sydney, as well as other locations around Australia to make your trip as easy as possible driving if possible

  • If you’re driving in the spring or summer, renting a campervan with air conditioning installed is also a good idea

  • Where to camp? There are plenty of campgrounds and caravan parks in and around the coastline, particularly near towns/cities, but be sure to book ahead during peak holiday periods.
